Investigation of building under construction

Name of Building: Melbourne Convention Centre
Architect: NH Architects and Woods Bagot
Builder:Multiplex Construction
Date built:Under construction (due for completion 2009)
I am intending to get some photos of details when the construction workers go back to work. My dad took this photo along with others, which I may post if I am unable to take some photos of my own. These photos are of a section that is at the begin of the construction process (march 2008), I am not sure if this will still look like this when i go to see it so i thought i would post these as a comparison for later photos that i hope to take. There are so many things going on. the top photo shows the piles and floor construction while the bottom images is just a photo of part of the site where they are still doing excavations.

week 3 Portal Frame, End Wall Section Detail

Roofing: It is important to use an angle for the roof that is within the limitations of the roofing material.
Fly Bracing: Fly bracing should be avoided if possible. While it provides a reaction force against uplift forces it is not always necessary and just adds more cost and embodied energy to the building.
Girts: Girts can either be ‘c’ or ‘z’ section, they should be orientated to limit the amount of rubbish that is able to be caught by them, which could result in damage to the girt. An element of the wall structure.
Zinc Alume capping: This cap prevents water entering and coming in contact with the structure elements that would be affected by exposure to water.
Safety mesh: Placed over purling for the safety of workers working on the roof.
Sarking: Insulation
Purlin: The section is the same as a girt the difference is purlins are part of the roof structure while girts are found in the wall structure.
Rafter: Universal beam, an ‘I’ section, supports the roof structure.
Mullion: Universal column, an ‘I’ section, in portal frame construction.
HD bolts: Hold down bolts, make sure they are checked and comply with standards.
